Pattern Description
This one repeats a simple bullseye motif, a ring with a smaller ring inside it, across the whole surface in a loose diagonal grid, offset row to row so the circles don’t line up into strict columns. The bullseyes are, of course, the Target store logo, and this was indeed a letter from Target.
Underneath that ring pattern runs a second layer matching it: broad diagonal bands of shading that shift in defined steps from lighter to darker tones and back again, giving the background a soft, rippling gradient rather than a flat ground. The shading is done by changing the size of the dots in the dot matrix that makes them up; the number and positioning of the dots is otherwise consistent.
The rings themselves stay a consistent size and weight throughout, so all the tonal movement in the piece comes from that shaded band structure sitting underneath them.
This was on one of those envelopes with tear-away sides and a tear-away top to reveal the message printed on the same paper within, so there are multiple layers of this pattern and it’s structured a little differently than most envelopes.
