House Party: March 2009

What kind of photos does a $10 digital camera from Walgreens take when you’re drunk? These digital beauties from 3/14/2009 answer the question. It was the Vivitar Marscam.

A low-resolution digital photo taken with a Vivitar Marscam shows JT Royster lounging casually on a tan futon, his posture slouched and relaxed. He’s wearing a red shirt and is looking at the camera. Nearby, a large, vividly green inflatable ball sits on the floor, its plastic sheen catching the light in the room. The background is slightly washed out, typical of the camera’s harsh indoor flash, and the image has noticeable noise and pixelation.

Paul Meekin is standing behind a dorm room beer pong table, wearing a jersey with the number 83. He’s looking downwards, mid-motion, his hands possibly gesturing. The beer pong table is lined with red plastic Solo cups, and some scattered cans or bottles are visible. The lighting is uneven and blown out, with oversaturation typical of the Vivitar Marscam's tiny sensor and crude lens.

Two figures are visible in the frame, both male. One is Paul Meekin again, in his number 83 jersey, partially turned away from the camera. The other, unidentified, is closer to the left and appears to be scratching the back of his head. They're both in a standard college dorm environment, lit by ceiling lights, with bare walls and minimal furniture. The colors bleed slightly and detail is low, capturing more of a vague vibe than crisp definition.

A snapshot of Ethan Hulbert (me!!) and Eric Bird standing close together, with dim lighting barely illuminating us. Ethan, with shaggy hair, is half-smiling, and Eric has shoulder-length hair, wearing a dark striped shirt. The background is vague and out of focus, possibly a hallway or dorm room, and there’s heavy grain and strong shadows. The image has a candid, chaotic energy typical of 2000s dorm party nights.

Paul Meekin stands in the dorm room again, wearing the same number 83 jersey, next to another person who is unidentified. Both are near a beer pong table scattered with Solo cups, which dominate the foreground. The unidentified person has short hair and is turned slightly away from Paul. The color bleed gives the photo a chaotic, off-kilter quality, consistent with a budget toy digital camera in a poorly lit dorm.

Eric Bird is playing guitar, seated or standing indoors, caught mid-strum in a low-quality dark photo. He wears a dark shirt, and his long hair falls near his face. The guitar, an acoustic, is partially visible but not well-defined due to motion blur and the Marscam’s poor light sensitivity. The vibe is intimate but the image lacks sharpness, looking more like a memory impression than a detailed capture.

A murky and underexposed photo dominated by deep blacks and streaks of blown-out light. Possibly taken in a dorm hallway or during a party moment where the camera failed to focus or meter correctly. Faint lines of ceiling lights or signs suggest an indoor setting, but the image is heavily distorted, with little clear subject matter—just digital noise, blurred motion, and fragmented highlights, evoking the chaos and energy of a night out captured with a toy camera.

By the way, if you have an old MarsCam/Vivitar digital camera you’ve been struggling with, I reverse engineered the old driver and made one that works with modern Windows. See my MarsCam Modern driver/downloader for yourself.
