Pattern Description
This one is made entirely of a repeating printed phrase, “Think Green! Please Recycle this Envelope,” running in tight horizontal rows across the whole surface.
The text alternates between two typefaces section to section, a looping script part and a plain sans-serif part, so the pattern reads with a subtle back-and-forth rhythm even before you register the words themselves. Because the lines are packed so closely and repeat so consistently, the individual letters start to blur together at a glance and the whole thing functions visually more like a ribbed texture than a message meant to be read. One imagines Bart Simpson writing the phrase on a chalkboard 100 times after being caught littering envelopes.
It’s an interesting effect to have something as simple as text be visually changed into a pattern by the act of repetition. It’s also interesting that it mirrors direction from one side to another so when it’s folded up correctly, the text is always upright–great attention to detail.
Note that the phrase also appears once in solid black on the outside of the envelope, which is both a reinforcement of the message and a tease of the art, if you’ll allow it.
